EV charger permits and inspection, explained
Adding a 240-volt circuit is permitted electrical work almost everywhere in the US. Here is what that actually means in practice.
Why a permit exists at all
A Level 2 charger is a high-amperage continuous load running for hours at a time, often in an attached garage. Undersized wire, a loose lug, or a missing ground is a fire risk that shows up months later. The permit is the mechanism that puts a second set of eyes on the work.
Who pulls it and what it costs
Your licensed electrician normally pulls the permit and includes the fee in the quote. Fees commonly land somewhere between $50 and $400 depending on the jurisdiction, and some cities have a flat-rate EV charger permit that is deliberately cheap to encourage compliance. A handful of places offer same-day online issuance.
What the inspector checks
Correct breaker size for the conductor, conductor sizing for a continuous load, proper torque and terminations at the panel, an intact equipment ground, GFCI protection where required for a receptacle, correct wet-location rating and conduit outdoors, secure mounting, and accurate labeling at the panel. On a clean install the visit is short.
What skipping it costs you
Unpermitted electrical work can complicate a homeowners insurance claim, shows up on resale and inspection reports, and can disqualify you from utility rebates and some tax credit documentation. If the local authority finds it, you may be told to open up finished walls to expose the run.
Utility notification is separate
Some utilities ask to be told about a new EV charger even when no service upgrade is involved, mainly for transformer planning and to enroll you in an EV rate. Ask your electrician whether your utility requires it — it is usually a form, not an obstacle.
Ready for a real number?
An estimate is a planning range. A licensed electrician can look at your panel, your run, and your permit rules and give you a firm price.
